Why is my fur shedding? Normal Wear vs. Real Concerns

Noticing your fur is shedding can be a bit startling, but don't panic. Most of the time, shedding is simply a natural part of a fur garment's early life. At Henig Furs, every fur garment is handcrafted, and a little shedding initially is perfectly normal.

Here is everything you need to know about why your fur may be shedding and how to keep your investment in pristine condition.

1. The "New Coat" Phase (Completely Normal)

When fur is cut and sewn into a garment, some hairs are inevitably severed at the base and can become trapped in the fur, and the seams. As you begin to wear the fur, these loose hairs will work their way out.

  • What to expect: A few individual strands on your clothes or a light dusting of hair when you first shake out the garment.
  • The Fix: Give your fur a firm, but gentle, shake outdoors. You can also use a soft-bristled brush, specifically designed for fur, to help clear out these residual hairs.

2. Friction & Static (Common Wear)

External factors like car seats, seat belts, or heavy shoulder bags can pull out guard hairs. Even dry winter air creates static that attracts loose strands.

  • The Fix: Avoid heavy shoulder straps that create "rubbing points." These rubbing points can create wear and tear on your fur over time. We also recommend removing your fur before putting on your seatbelt to prevent crushing the guard hairs.

3. When Should I Be Concerned?

If the shedding persists or changes in nature, it may indicate that the pelts are drying out or even a moth infestation. Watch for these red flags:

  • Clumping: Fur coming out in tufts rather than single strands.
  • Bald Spots: Visible patches of leather. This is often a sign of moth damage.
  • Brittleness: If the fur feels dry, or if the garment makes a cracking sound when bending, that's a sign that the pelts are dry.

Don't Wait: Shedding should be evaluated promptly. The earlier it’s addressed, the better the outcome. Bring your garment to Henig Furs for a complimentary evaluation as soon as possible.

The Secret to Longevity: Cold Storage & Cleaning

The most common cause of shedding is the leather drying out. Furs require a very specific environment to stay supple. To protect your investment, follow these golden rules:

Home Storage Do's & Don'ts:

  • NEVER store fur in plastic or garment bags (garment bags are for travel only).
  • NEVER store your fur near heat, A/C vents, or in damp areas.
  • NEVER store your fur in your closet during the spring & summer months.
  • ALWAYS use a broad shoulder hanger to help maintain the garment's shape
  • NEVER hang your fur in a cramped closet.
  • AVOID perfume or hairspray contact, as the alcohol can dry out the pelts.

If Your Fur Gets Wet:
Never use a hairdryer or heat source. Simply hang it in a well-ventilated area to air dry, then bring to a professional furrier for cleaning & conditioning.

Fur Cleaning Do's & Don'ts:

  • NEVER dry clean or try to clean your fur at home.
  • ALWAYS have your fur professionally cleaned & conditioned. With five generations of fur care expertise, Henig Furs offers professional fur cleaning & conditioning, and we welcome all furs, no matter where they were purchased.

Professional Maintenance:
Natural oils in the pelt will eventually evaporate. Once they are gone, they can not be replenished, leading to rips and heavy shedding.

  • Professional Cleaning & Conditioning: Regularly cleaning your fur protects these oils and keeps the fur soft & supple. Henig Furs offers professional cleaning & conditioning, you're welcome to visit any of our stores, events, or purchase cleaning & conditioning online with our convenient Ship & Store option.
  • Professional Cold Storage: During the spring and summer, place your fur in our light-controlled, humidity-controlled and climate-controlled facilities. This protects your fur from moths, oxidization, and heat damage, and prolongs the life of your garment. You're welcome to bring your fur to any of our stores, events, or you may purchase storage online with our Ship & Store option

*A Note on Fur Types:
It is helpful to remember that some furs are naturally more prone to shedding. Rabbit fur lacks guard hairs and tends to shed more than other types of fur. Similarly, long-haired furs like fox fur may shed more than short-haired varieties like mink fur.
